The artist behind the magic
Hello, I’m Sohana - a self-taught Bengali-Canadian artist based in Toronto, Ontario whose works are heavily influenced by the historical decorative arts of Europe and Asia. Chinoiserie, brocade, chintz and toile de jouy are all sources of inspiration for me. The classical motifs in my creations offer an air of regality and elegance which are further emphasized through ornate golden accents that imitate antique interiors. My fascination with traditional design methods and appreciation for classical music unite in producing whimsical masterpieces that dance with the light, creating a magical experience for any viewer.
History behind the history
As an admirer of the timeless beauty of the neoclassical era, I had the honour of being a student of history, linguistics and French studies at the University of Waterloo during which time I was able to learn about the history of European trade with Asia and the birth of decorative arts. One area of particular interest to me were styles that emerged in Europe in the 17th to 19th centuries as a result of increased trade and relations. European artists drew inspiration from the novel and "exotic” arts of East Asia at the time to create their own interpretative style and introduce it as chinoiserie and later japonisme. This aesthetic brought together elements from the two worlds and used motifs such as landscapes, gardens, pagodas and wildlife. The styles soon became the most popular and influential style used in everything from architecture, furniture, wallpapers, textiles to notable works of fine art such as those of French rococo painter, Francois Boucher. (1703-1770) and later post-expressionist painter, Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890).
Meanwhile, Europe’s trade with the South Asian subcontinent allowed for European decorative arts to incorporate motifs such as paisleys, lotus flowers, elephants and other South Asian elements into their textiles, furniture, jewellery and above all, fashion. Because of its popularity, cotton, silk and chintz were highly prized for their intricacy and vibrant colours and were imported in large volumes through the British and the Dutch East India Company, thus revolutionizing the fashion industry for centuries to come.
My work pays homage to this fascinating historical period which adds new layers of meaning and interpretation to my designs. By incorporating traditional motifs and techniques into my work, I am able to explore the complex artistic interplay that took place between Europe and Asia centuries ago and reimagine these traditions with a modern perspective.
